Water Feature Maintenance in the UAE: Algae, Scale and Pump Care
30 October 2026 · Husain Vajihi, founder of 1-OPH
Short answer: A water feature in the UAE needs a quick weekly check, a monthly pump clean and a seasonal deep clean. Keep the water topped up, because evaporation in the heat concentrates minerals and leaves scale. Treat algae early with a feature-safe treatment, never bleach, and keep the pump intake clear.
Fountains are the pieces our clients love most and neglect most. A water feature that is looked after for ten minutes a week will run beautifully for years. One that is left alone through a Dubai summer turns green, crusts white and starts to rattle.
This is the routine we give every client when we hand over a fountain.
What should I check every week?
- Water level. In summer a fountain can lose a lot of water to evaporation. If the level drops, the pump runs dry and burns out. An automatic top-up is worth every dirham.
- Debris. Skim leaves, sand and insects before they sink and rot.
- Sound. A change in sound, a rattle or a gurgle, usually means low water or a blocked intake.
Why does scale build up, and how do I stop it?
Every litre that evaporates leaves its minerals behind. In UAE heat that happens fast, so white crust forms where water dries on stone and steel, especially on the lip of a basin. Topping up with fresh water slows it down; draining and refilling every month or two resets it.
Clean light scale with water and a soft cloth. For heavier deposits on stone, use a cleaner made for natural stone. Never use acid or vinegar on marble or limestone; it etches the surface permanently.
How do I stop algae in a fountain?
Algae loves sun, warmth and still water, which is a Dubai garden in a sentence. Keep the water moving, keep it topped up, and use a treatment made for water features at the dose on the label. Shade helps a lot.
Do not use chlorine bleach or pool chemicals unless we have confirmed they suit your stone and finish. They can bleach patina, discolour stone and corrode some metals.
How often should the pump be cleaned?
Once a month, and after any sandstorm. Switch off, lift the pump, rinse the intake screen and impeller housing, and check the cable for damage. A clean pump runs quieter, uses less power and lasts much longer. If it still struggles after cleaning, the impeller may be worn.
What does a seasonal deep clean involve?
Twice a year, ideally before and after summer, drain the feature fully, clean the basin and surfaces, check the seals and fixings, descale, then refill and re-treat. For stone features, this is also when to check the sealer with a few drops of water; if they soak in rather than bead, it is time to reseal.
The same stone checks are in our year-round outdoor marble care guide.
When should I call 1-OPH?
If water is leaking from the basin, the pump has failed, the flow won't settle after cleaning, or the stone shows cracks or spreading stains. Those are not DIY jobs. We can help with the piece itself and connect you with trusted professionals who service fountain pumps and plumbing.
If you are still choosing a fountain, positioning matters as much as care; see where to place a water feature and custom water features for villa courtyards.
What I tell clients
- Water level every week; an automatic top-up saves pumps.
- Clean the pump intake monthly and after every sandstorm.
- No acid, vinegar or bleach on stone or patina.
- Drain and deep clean twice a year, before and after summer.
- Shade and moving water are the best algae prevention.
Frequently asked questions
How often should a fountain be cleaned in the UAE?
Check water level and debris weekly, clean the pump intake monthly and after sandstorms, and drain and deep clean twice a year.
Why does my fountain have white crust on it?
Evaporation leaves minerals behind as scale. Topping up regularly and draining every month or two slows it; clean with water or a stone-safe cleaner.
How do I stop algae in my water feature?
Keep the water moving and topped up, add shade where possible, and use a treatment made for water features. Avoid bleach and pool chemicals unless confirmed safe for your materials.
Can I use vinegar to clean a marble fountain?
No. Vinegar and other acids etch marble and limestone permanently. Use plain water or a cleaner made for natural stone.
When should I call a professional?
For leaks, a failed pump, flow that won't settle after cleaning, or cracks and spreading stains in the stone.
