Art and Sculpture in a Majlis: Placement for a Room Built for Guests

Short answer: In a majlis, everything is seen from a low seat around the edges of the room, often in the evening. Hang wall art lower than usual, with its centre around 120 to 135 cm from the floor, keep the middle of the room clear, and choose warm metals and stone that read well under soft, angled light.

The majlis is the room where a Gulf home says who it is. Guests sit there before they see anything else, and they often sit there for hours. Yet when people plan art for it, they plan as if it were a living room where everyone stands at the door and looks in.

It isn't. A majlis is read from a seat, around the walls, mostly after sunset. Get those three things right and the room looks generous and calm. Get them wrong and the art floats above everyone's heads.

How is art seen differently in a majlis?

From low down and from the edges. Seating runs around the walls, so every guest looks across the room at the wall opposite, not up at it. The eye line of a seated adult on a majlis sofa or floor cushion sits somewhere around 100 to 120 cm, well below the 150 cm we use for standing rooms.

That changes everything about height. A wall piece hung at living-room height reads as too high from every seat, and the bottom of it disappears behind the head of whoever sits in front of it. Drop it, and it suddenly belongs to the room.

How high should wall art hang in a majlis?

I aim for the centre of a piece at around 120 to 135 cm from the floor, lower still if guests sit on floor cushions. Above a long majlis sofa, leave 15 to 20 cm between the back cushions and the bottom edge of the art. That keeps the piece connected to the people sitting under it.

Width follows the same rule as any room: around two-thirds of the seating below it. Long majlis walls often suit two or three pieces in a row, spaced evenly, rather than one piece trying to cover eight metres. The general sizing rules are in wall art size and height for a living room.

Should sculpture stand in the middle of a majlis?

Usually not. The centre of a majlis is for movement, serving and conversation across the room. A large floor piece there blocks sightlines between guests, which is the opposite of what the room is for. Keep the centre clear, or use a low table-height piece that people can see over.

Sculpture works best at the ends of the room, in corners, or on a low plinth beside the entrance where guests pass it on the way in. A dark marble plinth around 60 to 80 cm high puts a smaller piece at seated eye level, which is exactly where it should be.

How should a majlis be lit for art?

Warm and low. Majlis gatherings happen mostly in the evening, under soft light, so pieces need to look good at night. Bronze, brass and woven gold metals come alive under warm light around 2700 K. Pale stone glows. Cool white light makes the whole room feel like an office.

Light the art from outside it, with an adjustable spot angled across the surface from the ceiling or a recessed slot. We never build lights into our pieces; the shadows and reflections the light makes on the surface are what give a metal piece its depth after dark.

What materials suit a majlis?

Materials with warmth and weight. Bronze in dark or golden patinas, brushed and woven brass, black and cream marble, travertine. They sit comfortably next to the textiles, wood and carpets that most majlis rooms are built around. Mirror-polished steel can work in a very modern majlis, but it competes with chandeliers and gilding in a traditional one.

Faceted and geometric forms echo the patterns already in the room without copying them. If you want help choosing between materials, our guide to marble, bronze and stainless steel is a good place to start.

How many pieces does a majlis need?

Fewer than you think. One strong wall piece opposite the main seating, one or two smaller works on the side walls, and perhaps one sculpture near the entrance. A majlis full of objects feels busy, and the conversation is the point of the room.

Plan the main wall first. Everything else is chosen to support it. The whole-house approach, including the entrance that leads into the majlis, is in where to place a sculpture in your villa and choosing a sculpture for your villa entrance.

What I tell clients

  • Plan for seated eye level, not standing: centre wall art around 120 to 135 cm.
  • Keep the middle of the room clear for people and conversation.
  • Use low plinths so smaller pieces sit at seated eye height.
  • Warm light from outside the piece, chosen for evening gatherings.
  • One main wall, a few supporting pieces, nothing more.

Frequently asked questions

How high should art hang in a majlis?

Lower than in a living room. Aim for the centre of the piece around 120 to 135 cm from the floor, and 15 to 20 cm above the back of the seating.

Can I put a sculpture in the centre of a majlis?

Only if it is low enough to see over. The centre is for movement and conversation, so most sculpture works better at the ends, in corners or near the entrance.

What lighting is best for art in a majlis?

Warm light around 2700 K from adjustable spots angled across the surface. Majlis rooms are used mostly in the evening, so test pieces under night lighting.

Which materials suit a majlis?

Bronze, brushed and woven brass, black and cream marble and travertine. They sit well with the textiles, wood and carpets most majlis rooms use.

How many art pieces should a majlis have?

Usually one main wall piece, one or two smaller works and perhaps a sculpture near the entrance. Fewer, stronger pieces keep the room calm.
