Buying an Outdoor Fountain in the UAE: Sizes, Pumps, Water Loss and Price

Short answer: For an outdoor fountain in the UAE, choose a size that reads from the main seating or window, usually larger than you expect, and a design with a hidden reservoir and an automatic top-up. Stone, bronze and marine-grade steel all suit the climate. Price depends on size, material and whether it is a catalogue piece or custom.
Fountains are the piece clients enjoy most. The sound changes a garden, it cools the feeling of a terrace even when the air is warm, and it gives the eye somewhere to rest. They are also the piece people buy most carelessly, usually by picking a photo they like and hoping it works.
These are the questions I go through with every client before we choose an outdoor fountain.
Should I buy a ready fountain or have one made?
Both work. A catalogue fountain is a proven design: you can see it, the proportions are resolved, and it is quicker to decide on. Most of our pedestal, sphere and wall fountains can be made larger or smaller, or in a different stone or metal, without becoming a full commission.
A custom fountain makes sense when the space is unusual, when the fountain has to work with a particular architecture, or when you want something nobody else has. It takes more design time and more approvals. The process is the same one we use for all bespoke work, described in how a commission works.
What size of outdoor fountain do I need?
Bigger than the photo suggests. Gardens are large, and you mostly see a fountain from inside the house or from the terrace, often 10 metres away or more. A pedestal fountain of 65 cm diameter is right for a courtyard or a small terrace. A garden axis seen from the living room usually wants something taller, a tiered fountain or a large sphere.
Stand where you will usually see it, and mark the height on a pole or a stack of boxes. If it looks right, go one size up. I have never had a client tell me their fountain was too big.
How does the pump and water system work?
Most of our fountains recirculate. Water runs from a reservoir hidden under or behind the fountain, up through a submersible pump, over the stone or metal, and back down. You need a power point nearby, ideally on its own switched circuit, and a way to top up the water.
Wall fountains can be self-contained or plumbed into a basin below. Larger features may need a small plant space for the pump and filter. Plan that before the landscaping goes in, not after. Our guide to placing a water feature covers where these services should go.
How much water does a fountain lose in summer?
A lot, and it surprises people. In July and August, evaporation and splash can take a noticeable amount from the reservoir every day. If the level drops too far, the pump runs dry and fails. That is the single most common fountain problem we see in Dubai.

Which materials last outdoors in the UAE?
Natural stone, especially denser stones and sealed limestone and marble. Bronze, which gains a patina and handles heat and salt air well. Marine-grade stainless steel for modern designs. Copper, which darkens and greens over time if left untreated.
Avoid cheap cast resins and painted finishes outdoors. They fade, chalk and crack in the sun, often within a couple of summers. If a fountain is very light for its size, ask what it is made of.
How much does an outdoor fountain cost in Dubai?
It depends on four things: size, material, design complexity, and installation. A pedestal fountain in stone for a courtyard sits at the accessible end. Large tiered fountains, big spheres and bespoke designs sit at the other end, and the plumbing, base and installation are part of the cost too.
