Commissioning a bespoke sculpture is simpler than it sounds. It moves through five clear stages — conversation, design, approval, fabrication and installation — each with its own decisions. Knowing the path makes the whole thing feel less like a leap and more like a collaboration.
Stage 1 — the first conversation
Everything begins with a conversation about the space and the intent: where the piece will live, what it should do, the scale you imagine, and a working budget. There is no obligation at this stage — it exists to understand what the piece is for. The clearer the picture of the space, the better the design that follows.
Stage 2 — design and proposal
Next come sketches, material options and, where it helps, a small maquette to test the form in three dimensions. This is where the idea is refined together — proportions adjusted, material chosen, finish considered — until the proposal feels right. It is the most collaborative stage, and the cheapest place to change your mind.
Stage 3 — approval and agreement
With the design resolved, everything is locked: the form, the dimensions, the material and finish, the price and the timeline, set out in clear terms. This is the point of commitment, and it protects both sides — once approved, the piece is made exactly as agreed.
Stage 4 — fabrication and updates
Now the piece is made — carved or cast, then finished. This is the longest stage, and progress is shared along the way so you can see the work take shape. It is the part where craft does the talking, and it is not rushed.
Stage 5 — delivery and installation
Finally the piece is crated, shipped and installed on its base, with care given to siting and how it meets the space, plus guidance on aftercare. From first conversation to a finished piece in place, the path is steady and clear.
