Travertine: Why This Stone Is Everywhere, and Where It Works

Short answer: Travertine is a warm, porous limestone that suits sculpture bases, plinths and indoor pieces in Dubai homes. Choose filled and honed for indoor plinths that need a clean surface, and unfilled or tumbled for a softer, older look. Outdoors it works in shade but needs sealing and gentle cleaning.
Two years ago clients asked for white marble. Now, at least once a week, someone sends a screenshot of a cream, pitted stone and asks for "that one". It is travertine, and it has quietly become the default stone in Dubai interiors.
I like it a lot. It also has quirks you should know before you put it under a sculpture you love.
What is travertine, and why is it so popular now?
Travertine is a limestone formed around mineral springs, which is why it has those small holes and channels running through it. The colour runs from ivory and cream to walnut and silver-grey. It is warmer and softer-looking than marble, and it suits the earthy, calm interiors that most of our designers are building right now.
It also photographs well, which has helped. Nothing reads as "quiet luxury" on a phone screen faster than a block of honed travertine in good light.
Filled or unfilled, honed or tumbled: what's the difference?
Filled: the holes are filled with resin or cement in a matching colour. Smoother, easier to clean, the right choice for a plinth top that a sculpture sits on.
Unfilled: the holes are left open. More texture, more character, more places for dust to settle.
Honed: a flat matte finish. Calm and modern.
Tumbled or brushed: softened edges and a worn surface. Reads older and more rustic.
The same choice between honed and polished applies to marble; we cover it in honed vs polished marble.
Is travertine good for sculpture plinths?
It is one of the best. The warm colour sets off bronze, brass and polished steel, and a heavy travertine base gives a light metal piece weight and presence. Stepped, tall and slim plinth profiles all work, and the stone can be cut to match the proportions of the piece above.
For a plinth that carries a heavy piece, we size the base to the sculpture's weight and fix the two together. Never just stand a tall piece on a polished top and hope.
Can travertine be used outdoors in the UAE?
Yes, with care. Heat is not the problem; travertine copes with sun well. The issue is porosity. Unfilled travertine outdoors collects sand, irrigation water and leaf stains in its holes. In a shaded courtyard or covered terrace it is lovely. Right next to sprinklers, it will mark.
Seal it, keep irrigation off it and clean it with plain water and a soft brush. Acidic cleaners will etch it, just like marble. The full routine for outdoor stone is in our year-round outdoor marble care guide.
Is travertine as strong as marble?
It is softer and more porous than most marbles, so edges chip a little more easily and stains soak in faster. For carved sculpture with thin, delicate sections, marble or granite is the better stone. For blocky forms, bases, columns and plinths, travertine is more than strong enough.
If you are comparing materials for a whole piece, the marble, bronze or stainless steel guide is the place to start.
What does travertine pair well with?
Mirror and brushed steel, which look sharper against its softness. Bronze and brass, which share its warmth. Dark granite and black marble, for contrast. I would avoid pairing it with a cream marble of a similar tone; the two stones fight and both look slightly wrong.
What I tell clients
- Filled and honed for a plinth top; unfilled or tumbled for character.
- Shade and sealing make travertine work outdoors; sprinklers ruin it.
- Use marble or granite for delicate carving, travertine for blocky forms and bases.
- It flatters bronze, brass and steel more than almost any other stone.
- Size the base to the piece's weight and fix them together.
Frequently asked questions
What is travertine?
A porous limestone formed around mineral springs, with characteristic small holes. It ranges from ivory and cream to walnut and silver-grey.
Should I choose filled or unfilled travertine?
Filled for smooth, easy-to-clean surfaces such as plinth tops; unfilled for more texture and an older look.
Can travertine be used outside in Dubai?
Yes, ideally in shade. Seal it, keep irrigation off it and clean it with water and a soft brush. Avoid acidic cleaners.
Is travertine good for sculpture plinths?
Yes. Its warm tone suits bronze, brass and steel, and a solid base gives a piece weight. Size it to the sculpture and fix the two together.
Is travertine weaker than marble?
It is softer and more porous, so it chips and stains more easily. It suits blocky forms and bases; marble or granite suits delicate carving.
