Wall Art for a Dubai Living Room: Size, Height and Spacing

Short answer: For a Dubai living room, wall art should span roughly two-thirds of the sofa or console below it, with its centre about 150 cm from the floor and 20 to 25 cm of air above the sofa back. Sculptural wall pieces need more space around them than prints, and light from the side, not straight on.

Most living rooms I walk into in Dubai have the same problem: a beautiful wall, a beautiful sofa, and a piece of art that is too small for both. The wall is 5 metres wide and 3.5 metres high, and someone has hung something 80 cm across in the middle of it. It looks like a postage stamp.

Here are the rules I use on site, the same ones we use when we mock a piece into a client's room before anything is made.

How big should wall art be above a sofa?

Yelmo — oxblood and black round metal wall relief with a warrior's helm, studio front view

Start at two-thirds of the sofa's width. A 270 cm sofa wants something around 180 cm wide, or a pair that together reads that wide. Go up to three-quarters if the wall is tall or the room is long. Below half the width, the art looks like it wandered in.

Height matters as much as width. In villas with 3.5 to 4.5 metre ceilings, a square or tall format usually beats a long low one, because it uses the height the architect gave you. For the big double-height walls, there is a separate set of rules in placing a large sculpture.

How high should wall art hang in a living room?

Alba — 120 × 150 cm pointed oval wall sculpture of pastel iridescent scales, close studio detail of the surface and material

The centre of the piece should sit around 145 to 155 cm from the floor, which is roughly eye level when standing. Over a sofa, keep the bottom edge 20 to 25 cm above the back cushions. Any higher and the art floats away from the furniture; any lower and people knock it with their heads.

In a majlis-style room where everyone sits low, drop the centre line by 10 to 15 cm. You look at that wall from a seat, not from the doorway.

Does 3D or sculptural wall art need more space?

Jamuh 180 — 180 cm stainless steel wall sculpture of a human head in profile made of swirling black and bronze strokes, the same room at night, lamps on

Yes. A metal or stone wall sculpture projects from the wall, often 8 to 20 cm, and it throws shadows. It needs breathing room so those shadows have somewhere to land. I leave at least 40 to 60 cm of clear wall on each side, more than I would for a framed print.

Depth also changes where it can go. Next to a walkway or behind a door swing, a piece with sharp edges or a deep profile is a hazard. Keep the deep pieces where people stop, not where they pass.

How should wall art be lit at night?

Telón — black bronze wall sculpture of theatre drapery in two deep swags, seen from above in the room

From the side or from above at an angle, never straight on. A spotlight about 30 degrees off the wall rakes across the surface and shows the texture. Head-on light flattens a bronze or brushed-steel surface and puts a hot spot in the middle of a mirror finish.

Warm light, around 2700 to 3000 K, suits bronze, brass and stone. Cooler light can work on polished steel. We never build lights into the pieces themselves; the light belongs on the art, not inside it.

Should a living room wall have one piece or several?

Cupola — ivory oval wall relief of a coffered dome, close view on the wall

One strong piece almost always beats a cluster of small ones on a big villa wall. Groups work in corridors and on smaller walls, where a rhythm of three or four pieces carries the eye along. If you do group, keep 8 to 12 cm between frames or pieces and treat the whole group as one shape when you size it against the sofa.

Think about what the wall faces, too. Pieces near a window will see strong afternoon sun in Dubai. Bronze and stainless steel handle that; some coloured finishes and printed works do not.

How do I choose the material for a feature wall?

Nebulosa — 120 × 120 cm round bronze wire wall sculpture woven around a rising peak, three-quarter studio view showing its profile

Match the room's other hard materials. A room full of warm stone and walnut suits bronze, brass and champagne tones. A white, glassy room suits brushed or mirror steel. Iridescent and coloured finishes are the boldest choice and work best when the rest of the room is quiet.

Our wall art collections are grouped by form and finish, which makes this easier to compare side by side. The guide to wall reliefs in stone and metal goes deeper on materials.

What I tell clients

  • Two-thirds of the sofa width is the starting point, not the maximum.
  • Centre at about 150 cm from the floor; drop it a little in rooms where everyone sits low.
  • Give sculptural pieces more side space than you would give a print.
  • Light at an angle, warm for bronze and stone.
  • Mock it up first. Painter's tape or a scaled render on the real wall saves the wrong purchase. The whole house approach is in where to place a sculpture in your villa.

Frequently asked questions

What size wall art goes above a sofa?

About two-thirds of the sofa's width, up to three-quarters on tall walls. A 270 cm sofa suits a piece around 180 cm wide, or a pair that reads as one shape that wide.

How high should I hang wall art in my living room?

Centre the piece around 145 to 155 cm from the floor. Over a sofa, leave 20 to 25 cm between the sofa back and the bottom edge of the art.

How much space does 3D wall art need?

More than a print. Leave at least 40 to 60 cm of clear wall on each side so the shadows have room, and keep deep pieces away from walkways.

How should I light a metal wall sculpture?

With a spotlight angled about 30 degrees off the wall, so light rakes across the surface. Warm light suits bronze and brass; avoid lighting straight on.

Is one large piece better than several small ones?

On a large villa wall, usually yes. Groups suit corridors and smaller walls, and should be sized as one combined shape.
