Bespoke vs Ready-Made Sculpture: Which Should You Choose?

Short answer: Choose ready-made when you need a piece now, the space is modest, or the right piece is already in front of you. Choose bespoke when the space is significant, nothing off the shelf fits the scale, or you want something no one else owns. There is also a middle route: take an existing design and have it made in your size, material and finish.

You might expect a bespoke studio to tell you to always commission. I will not. We keep finished pieces in our Al Quoz showroom precisely because sometimes the right answer is "take that one home this week". The trick is knowing which situation you are in.

When is ready-made the right choice?

• You need it now, for a handover, an event or a move-in.
• The space is modest and a standard size fits well.
• It is a first piece and you want to see exactly what you are getting.
• You walked past it and it was simply right.

What does bespoke give you that ready-made cannot?

A perfect fit to your space and scale, a true one-off, and material and finish chosen rather than compromised. For a defining room, an entrance, a double-height hall, a courtyard, those are decisive. A commission also carries its own story, which matters more over time than people expect; more on that in collecting sculpture: meaning and value.

Why do most people commission?

Because nothing off the shelf fits. The space, the sightline, the height against a double-height wall: these ask for a piece made to measure. A bought piece can only approximate the room. A commissioned one answers it exactly.

Is there a middle route?

Yes, and it is what most of our clients actually do. Our catalogue runs to thousands of designs, and almost any of them can be made in your size, your material and your finish. You start from a form you already like, so there is less uncertainty, and you still get the fit. See customise with us.

How do cost and time compare?

• Ready-made: fixed price, immediate.
• Customised catalogue design: a known starting price adjusted for size and material, usually weeks rather than months.
• Fully bespoke: quoted to the brief, about 6–10 weeks for smaller steel pieces and 3–6 months for large marble or bronze.

Is bespoke sculpture always better than ready-made?

No. Bespoke is better for significant spaces and exact fit; ready-made suits smaller spaces, tight deadlines and first pieces.

Why does commissioned art cost more than ready-made?

It is made for you alone, in your chosen material and scale, with design and fabrication time devoted to one piece. It is still often below gallery prices for comparable originals.

How long does bespoke take compared with buying?
