Short answer: A courtyard water feature in Dubai succeeds when it is designed for four things: summer evaporation, hard mineral-heavy water, the right level of sound, and a material that survives 45°C heat. Grade 316 stainless steel is the most forgiving, marble works with sealing and water treatment, and an automatic top-up with a filtration loop is not optional.

Water features are probably the pieces I love making most, and the ones most often ruined by the plumbing rather than the design. A beautiful marble basin covered in white scale after one summer, or a cascade so loud nobody can sit in the courtyard. Both are design problems, and both are avoidable.

Which type of water feature suits a courtyard?

• Sheet or wall features: water slides down a flat marble or steel face. Quiet, architectural and great against a courtyard wall when floor space is tight.
• Sculptural basins: a carved marble or cast bronze bowl as the centrepiece, brimming or gently overflowing.
• Reflecting pools: still water that mirrors the sky and the architecture. Almost silent.

What is the best material for a water feature in Dubai's heat?

316 stainless steel handles constant water and hard-water minerals best, and suits sheet faces and contemporary forms. Marble brings warmth and craft, but it needs sealing and kind water chemistry, because scale and acidic cleaners both mark it. Bronze develops a patina that many clients want, but that patina reacts with constant water, so we only specify it when the client wants that change. How do you design for evaporation and hard water?

On a hot day an open feature loses a real share of its water. So an automatic top-up and a properly sized reservoir are standard on our pieces. The bigger long-term issue is hard water. It leaves white calcium scale on surfaces and nozzles, and warm still water grows algae.

The fix is designed in from the start: a filtration and treatment loop, cleanouts you can actually reach, and finishes that either hide scale or shrug it off. Bolting this on later never works as well.

How loud should a courtyard water feature be?

As loud as you want, and that has to be decided at design stage. A high cascade can overwhelm an enclosed courtyard, while a brimming basin barely whispers. We tune flow rate, drop height and the surface the water lands on to the courtyard's acoustics and how you use it. Morning coffee and evening dinners need different sound. How should a water feature be lit at night?

From outside, always. Uplights grazing a marble face, a spot catching the movement of a cascade, reflections off polished steel. Our pieces never glow from within. The drama comes from light meeting the surface and the moving water.

• Plan water, power and drainage at design stage, not after the courtyard is tiled.
