Marble Sculpture in Dubai's Summer: A June to September Checklist

Short answer: Before June, test and reseal outdoor marble. Through the summer, rinse dust off weekly instead of wiping it, rinse chlorine and sunscreen splash the same day, keep acidic cleaners away, and shade pieces that take the harsh afternoon sun. Watch for white powder or new marks. In October, do a full clean and inspection.
Heat itself is rarely what hurts marble in a Dubai summer. It is the things that come with it: dust that gets wiped instead of rinsed, a lemon drink left on a ledge, pool splash drying in the sun, a sealer that quietly gave up in May. What actually harms marble in summer?
Marble handles heat far better than most materials. Over many years, big daily temperature swings add slow stress, mostly in dark stone. But the everyday summer risks are staining, etching from acids, abrasion from dust, and salt and chlorine from pools and sea air. Those are all things you can control.
What should I do before summer starts?
- May: water test. Drip water on the surface. If it soaks in within 30 seconds, reseal before June.
- Reseal with an impregnating sealer rated for outdoor UV, two coats, 24–48 hours apart.
- Check irrigation so sprinklers do not hit the piece all summer.
- Plan shade for pieces in full west sun: an umbrella, planting or, for movable pieces, a new spot.
What is the weekly summer routine?
- Rinse, do not wipe: a low-pressure rinse with clean water clears dust. Dry-wiping drags fine sand across the surface.
- Monthly wash: pH-neutral stone cleaner and a soft cloth.
- On the coast: a fresh-water rinse weekly to clear salt.
- Never: vinegar, lemon, bleach, household sprays or pressure washers.
How do I protect poolside marble in summer?
Summer is pool season, so this is when marble near water suffers most. Rinse off chlorine and sunscreen splash the same day; both mark the stone if they dry on it. Give the piece shade if you can. Ideally keep marble 3–4 m from the pool edge, and if a piece must sit right on the deck, 316 stainless steel is the better material; see placing sculpture outdoors.
What about indoor marble in summer?
Keep it out of the harshest direct afternoon sun through big glass, use coasters on marble tables and mantels, and dust with a soft dry cloth. Honed surfaces hide summer marks far better than polished ones; the trade-off is in honed vs polished marble.
What should I check in October?
- A full clean with pH-neutral stone cleaner.
- The water test again.
- Look for white powder (efflorescence), new etch marks, hairline cracks or movement at the base.
- Call a stone specialist for anything beyond light marks. Home remedies usually make stains worse.
