Why do Gulf homes have fireplaces?

As an architectural anchor. Open-plan villa living spaces often have no obvious focal point, so furniture floats. A fireplace gives the room a reason to organise itself around one wall.

It is also one of the best places in a home to show fine marble at scale: a framed expanse of stone at eye level that everyone sees. Winter evenings with a real flame are a bonus.

Which fire option should I choose?

Decide this first, because it changes the build.

• Decorative surround, no fire: the most design freedom and the simplest install. Very common here.
• Electric insert: realistic flame effect, no ventilation needed, easiest for apartments.
• Bioethanol: a real flame without a flue, but it needs proper clearances and ventilation.
• Flued gas or wood: the full experience, with the most technical requirements, planned with the project team.

How do I choose the marble?

A calm white or cream marble gives a serene, classical surround. A bold figured marble makes the fireplace the event of the room. A dark marble reads modern and serious.

How big should the fireplace be?

Proportion is the whole reason to go bespoke. The surround is drawn to the real wall, the ceiling height and the size of the room, so it looks like the architecture always had it.

In the double-height living rooms you find in Dubai Hills, Emirates Hills or The Oasis, a standard-size surround looks lost. Scale it up, or extend the stone above the mantel. In a smaller sitting room, keep it modest so it anchors without dominating. Honed or polished?

How is a bespoke fireplace commissioned and installed?

The same way as any piece: wall dimensions and photos, marble and finish chosen from samples, a drawing set showing the surround, hearth, fire unit and fixings, then fabrication and installation sequenced with the fit-out so the stone arrives protected and goes in clean.
