When should a designer specify bespoke over off-the-shelf?
When the space needs something singular: the right scale for a double-height hall, a form that finishes a sightline, a material that ties into the palette, or simply a piece no one else can own. On signature villas, branded residences and hospitality projects, where exclusivity is the brief, a catalogue piece rarely does the job.
What goes on the spec sheet?
- Position: plan reference, room, elevation.
- Dimensions: height, width, depth, plus plinth.
- Material and grade: for example "316 stainless steel, brushed" or "Statuario marble, honed".
- Finish reference: the approved sample number.
- Base and fixing: freestanding, anchored or wall-mounted.
- Weight: in kg, for the engineer and the install team.
- Lighting: fittings and angles, always external to the piece.
- Install window: date, access, who is on site.

What are the three client sign-offs?

- Pre-dispatch: photos and video of the finished piece before it leaves for site.

How should a designer handle budget and lead time with a client?
