Timeless Sleep
A pillow carved from solid marble — soft in every way but one.
A UAE-based design studio commissioned a sculptural pillow, carved from a single block of white marble. The piece plays a quiet trick: the softest object in a home, rendered in the hardest material we work with — complete with a scalloped frill border, a hand-carved stitch line, and an embroidered floral motif lifted from heirloom linen. From a distance it reads as fabric. Up close, it is stone.
Familiar From a Distance, Stone Up Close
The studio wanted an object that read as domestic and inviting at first glance, and revealed itself only on approach. The form had to be convincing — the sag of the fill, the ruffle of the frill, the pinprick rhythm of embroidery — with a honed matte finish soft enough to invite touch. Two marbles were proposed and sampled; the studio selected Guangxi White, whose quiet, even figuring keeps the eye on the carved detail rather than the stone's pattern.
Machined Rough, Finished by Hand
The block is first cut close to form under water-cooled machining, then everything that makes the piece believable happens by hand: the frill undercut scallop by scallop, the stitch borders picked out point by point, the floral motif carved in relief so shallow it reads as thread. The surface is honed rather than polished — a soft matte that holds light gently and completes the textile illusion. The client received photo and video updates at every stage.
Material
Guangxi White marble, carved from a single block. Honed matte finish, suitable for interior and exterior placement.
Dimensions
95 cm L × 77 cm W × 25 cm H per pillow. Approximately 180 kg.
Lead Time
Typically 12 to 14 weeks from approved design to delivery, including insured sea freight.
Placement
Free-standing — the stone's own weight anchors it. Poolside and garden settings supported with sealing guidance.
Crated, Insured, Positioned
At roughly 180 kg per pillow, each piece ships in an individually engineered timber crate, fully insured door to door. The finished sculpture is photographed and approved by the client before dispatch, and our team positions the piece on site — no fixing or foundation required.
Marble commissions at this scale are confirmed in a fixed proposal before any work begins. Payment is structured in two stages: 50% to confirm the order and 50% on approval of the completed piece, prior to dispatch. Every commission carries a one-year warranty against manufacturing defects. As a natural material, marble carries slight variation in tone and veining — each piece is one of one.
Commission Your OwnCan the pillow be personalised? +
Yes. The embroidery motif, stitch pattern and frill profile are all carved to order — a monogram, a family emblem or a motif drawn from your own linens can be worked into the design. Size and marble selection are equally open; we typically propose two or three stones with physical samples before carving begins.
Is it suitable for outdoor and poolside placement? +
Yes. The honed marble surface performs well outdoors, and we provide sealing guidance for poolside and garden settings. As a natural stone, the marble will develop slight variation in tone over time with sun and water exposure — a naturally occurring character of the material.
What does a commission like this cost, and how is payment structured? +
Marble pillow sculptures at this scale typically fall between USD 9,500 and 12,500 per piece, confirmed in a fixed proposal before any work begins. Payment is 50% on order confirmation and 50% on your approval of the finished piece, before delivery is scheduled.
